English Avenue is a 60 square block neighborhood located in Northwest Atlanta, a half of mile west of Georgia Tech, the World Congress Center, Coca-Cola, and the Georgia Dome. The northern border is Donald Lee Hollowell Pkwy (formerly Bankhead Hwy); the southern border is Joseph E. Boone Blvd.(formerly Simpson Rd.); the western border is Joseph E. Lowery Blvd; and the eastern border is Northside Drive. Joseph E. Boone Boulevard separates English Avenue from the neighboring community, known as Vine City.
English Avenue is a part of Neighborhood Planning Unit L, as well as the City of Atlanta Westside Tax Allocation District and Renewal Community area. It includes zip codes 30314 and 30318
English Avenue is located in the Neighborhood Planning Unit L (NPU), the City of Atlanta Westside Tax Allocation District and the Atlanta Renewal Community (ACORA) area. It is affectionately called the “Westside” by long-term residents.
One of the jewel public facilities and institutions in English Avenue is the English Avenue Elementary School located at 627 English Avenue, N.W. Atlanta Georgia 30318.
English Avenue Elementary was constructed in 1910 with 4 subsequent expansions, and sits on 3.2 acres of land. The property is zoned R-5: Two-Family Residential to allow neighborhood stakeholders maximum participation in the future development process, i.e., zoning requirements.
The property is currently vacant; yet the building since its closing is 1995 has been used as a transitional school site for Fowler Elementary School, and the site for three movies, with the most recent filming in 2006.
The school building like other vacant properties in the area has been vandalized; yet presently is secured. Nonetheless, the exterior structure is in good condition and reflects what once was a fine architecture structure.

English Avenue is a short walk from some of Atlanta’s largest employers and best amenities: the Coca-Cola headquarters, Georgia Tech, the Georgia Dome, Philips Arena, the World Congress Center, the Georgia Aquarium, Centennial Park, the Atlanta University Center and new development along Howell Mill Road and Marietta Street. Despite this, the area suffers from a variety of problems that dwarfs what’s going on in other parts of the city.
